Everyone using Linux as their operating system knows how secure this piece of software is when it comes to malware attacks. The security which such os offers, is one of the main reasons for its wide distribution in the hacking industry.
According to RT, CIA has been working on designing a program for the purpose of exploiting and hacking firewalls on a Linux operating device. The secret project know as the OutlawCountry, has been exposed for the public by WikiLeaks, an international non-profit organisation which publishes secret information and classified materials.
The virus targets a specific version of Linux distribution, for it to work successfully the target must be running on a compatible 64-bit version of CentOS/RHEL 6.x (kernel version 2.6.32). Based on the user manual of OutlawCountry, the virus exploits some bug on the firewall settings, giving the attacker the possibility to alter the netfilter/iptables rules.
Although there is no trusted information yet on what is the main reason of CIA for developing such project, Linux is not as safe as it was before becoming popular among the average user. Let us know your opinion on this in the comments section.
